Burnin the Wick at both ends

 Happy Memorial Day!!

According to one site I visited the original suggestion for Memorial Day came from Henry C. Wells, who was a druggist in the village of Waterloo, NY. The following year he again mentioned it to General John B. Murry, who embraced the idea and there were parades a decorations placed at all local cemeteries on each veteran’s grave.
A committee formed before the Centennial Celebration to seek congressional recognition for Waterloo as the birthplace of Memorial Day… first called Decoration Day. In May of 1966, just in time for the Centennial, Waterloo was recognized as the "Birthplace of Memorial Day" by the United States Government.

While there are claims from other communities such as Pittsburgh on Memorial Day, Waterloo is the only one to be sanctioned by the US Government. Here is the order from General John B. Murry.

General Orders No.11, WASHINGTON, D.C., May 5, 1868
The 30th day of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet church-yard in the land. In this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit.
We are organized, comrades, as our regulations tell us, for the purpose among other things, "of preserving and strengthening those kind and fraternal feelings which have bound together the soldiers, sailors, and marines who united to suppress the late rebellion." What can aid more to assure this result than cherishing tenderly the memory of our heroic dead, who made their breasts a barricade between our country and its foes? Their soldier lives were the reveille of freedom to a race in chains, and their deaths the tattoo of rebellious tyranny in arms. We should guard their graves with sacred vigilance. All that the consecrated wealth and taste of the nation can add to their adornment and security is but a fitting tribute to the memory of her slain defenders. Let no wanton foot tread rudely on such hallowed grounds. Let pleasant paths invite the coming and going of reverent visitors and fond mourners. Let no vandalism of avarice or neglect, no ravages of time testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided republic.
If our eyes grow dull, other hands slack, and other hearts cold in the solemn trust, ours shall keep it well as long as the light and warmth of life remain to us.
Let us, then, at the time appointed gather around their sacred remains and garland the passionless mounds above them with the choicest flowers of spring-time; let us raise above them the dear old flag they saved from his honor; let us in this solemn presence renew our pledges to aid and assist those whom they have left among us a sacred charge upon a nation's gratitude, the soldier's and sailor's widow and orphan.
It is the purpose of the Commander-in-Chief to inaugurate this observance with the hope that it will be kept up from year to year, while a survivor of the war remains to honor the memory of his departed comrades. He earnestly desires the public press to lend its friendly aid in bringing to the notice of comrades in all parts of the country in time for simultaneous compliance therewith.
Department commanders will use efforts to make this order effective.
By order of
JOHN A. LOGAN,
Commander-in-Chief
N.P. CHIPMAN,
Adjutant General
Official:
WM. T. COLLINS, A.A.G.

 Way to show your support

This one is for Nutty Mom! I don't know if these sites will be linkable like this but some of them are in my favorites. I visited them all today to make sure they were up and running.
If these don't help just type in adopt a soldier or care packages or support our troops and let Google do the looking!

My mom sends lip balm and chapstick to soldiers. She sells Mary Kay and had sent some to my husband in a care package he loved it!! He lost it and has asked for more. She has offered that if anyone wants to order on her website she will assume the shipping cost and send it to the soldiers herself...her web site is www.MaryKay.com/mgrider the chap stick is listed under skin care. The guys also love this gift pack ...man pack that they are currently selling!!

www.anysoldier.com
This site is my favorite and has awesome lists! There are links for most products. Today I saw a request for Beanie Babies that the soldiers can carry with them to give to the children in Iraq. I also saw an ad for Mustard Seed People..a suggestion to send to soldier so that he can send home to his family. They are too cute..but it wouldn't let me copy the pic...so you will have to go see them yourself.

http://www.opgratitude.com/ This organization has a drive going on currently They do 2 drives a year. One for the holidays and one for the 4th of July. Rally's/ Checker's Restaraunts are taking donations of items and selling cups with the America Supports You logo. You can see more at the above site.

Calling Cards for Troops
The best plan for calling cards for troops overseas are the cards that are available from the Military Exchange system. These cards give you all the minutes that are purchased. Unlike other cards that you may purchase 60 minutes and get only 10 minutes of talk time. With this card you get what you pay for. The Military Exchange system will now allow anyone to purchase the cards for a servicemember.

You can purchase the cards on line at the Military Exchange website.

At this site you can order and send packages created online!! You can find a soldier to foster or send one to a soldier you know!

http://www.singforpeace.com/adopt.html
At this site you can mail care packages to addresses given and they will be given to soldiers who have not recieved a care package from home.

As always prayers are needed and definately appreciated!!! If you know a family that has a loved one deployed...let them know you care. You could offer to baby sit or maybe make dinners every once in a while. One of my neighbors mowed my grass for months while my husband was deployed last summer. That same neighbor has my kids over to play with his children often. He happens to be a Police Officer so he let me know that if I was ever scared just call on his cell phone and he or his wife would come keep me company! It is nice to have people show they care!

Grateful Blessings!
Have a great evening!

 Same place, same time....

There was a time when longing was all I had
You knew my name and wanted no more
There was a time when you made me sad
I was crazy beautiful and you wanted no part of what I had
There was a time you longed for me
I was running from what I did not know
There was a time when I could not remember
You were all I ever wanted
There was a time when I was sure you would punish me
Make me pay for all the harm
There was a time when you assured me
All was forgotten and forgiven
There was a time when we danced
I dream of those dances today
There was a time when I didn't know if you loved me
You have showed me time and time again
There was a time when I was all you needed
I was so frustrated at the lack of inspiration
There was a time when you realized your dream
That dream took you far away from me
Today all I have is time
Time to reflect and hope and dream
Hopefully there is a time when you will be satisfied
A time when you will need to be home as much as I want you here
I wait for a time when you will be beside me again
A time for everything to slow down
For us to be in the same place at the same time!!!
I love you and I miss you!
Be safe! and come home to me!!!
